WORKING INSIDE AND OUTSIDE

November 1, 2010

Daron went home last Tuesday afternoon. Frank has been on the roof any time since then that it is decent to be on the roof. He spent one day in Morgantown helping a Friend and his son build a house.

First, you fasten a piece of metal on. The next one is fit over the screws, and tucked under a lip by the screws. As each section is finished, you go back and add the ridge vent and cap, and the flashing and cap at the top of the roof by the gazebo.

Frank modified some of the cabinets with organizational things.

Frank installed the washer and dryer.

He set up the pantry shelves.

He has laid the bedroom carpet.

I have been painting in the study.

I went back to Bobtown to pick up our venison. I have also been planting more flowers.

MORE SPEED BUMPS

OCTOBER 25, 2010

This week I continued to work on the doors, frames, trim, stops, and the supports for the breakfast bar. I finished! I planted a few flowers. I have been opening boxes of things for the kitchen, running them through the dishwasher, cleaning out a cabinet a day, and putting things in my new cupboards! I often find myself cleaning the floors--sometimes on both levels. Today I painted the inside of our bedroom closet.

The cook stove had been stored in John and Tonya's garage during the time they lived in the apartment while their house was being built. They had a big mouse problem, and had to throw some things away because of it. the stove was very dirty and had nut shells in it. Frank decided to take it to the car wash and wash it thoroughly. After he returned, he turned it over to fix the legs, and more nut shells rolled out! When it had dried completely, he went to install it, and found that it was plumbed for natural gas instead of bottled. He ordered the parts, and tried out the oven (which was electric.) He said that he only had it on for about 5 minutes, but the smell was terrible--probably mouse urine. He even came up here to watch the Phillies game, because he couldn't stand to be in our house! Speed Bump #4: We are looking at buying a new stove.

Frank then turned his attention to the roof. He spent a couple days working on the car port roof. He put metal on the back half, and figured out how to, and installed the ridge cap with it's venting system. He decided to begin on the gazebo roof. Daron arrived Friday night to help him with the roof. They finished the gazebo, and started working on the main part of the house roof. Notice how busy the chimney chase has become!

The last picture is looking back toward the carport.

It rained all day Monday, so they couldn't work on the roof. All together they finished a little over one third of the main roof. Speed Bump #4: the roof needs lots more metal.

Since it rained, they installed the three doors instead.

It seems that I am only getting half days of work in. I volunteer for a hospice on Wednesday mornings. I cleaned most of one morning. Saturday morning Frank harvested some venison, so I spent the morning making arrangements for, and taking it to, the butcher. It's been several years since he's been able to do that. We will now have a major supply of meat for the winter.

SPEED BUMPS

OCTOBER 18, 2010

We spent three days in Eastern PA. It was good to see so many of Frank's family and friends. Someone commented that it is too bad that we wait until someone dies to get together. There was much sharing and caring, remembering, and hugging that transpired. To the usual memorial services were added a 15 minute video with pictures of Mom from childhood to the end of life, and one child, one grandchild, and great grandchild shared memories of her from themselves and their peers. I think it all gave a good picture of the vivacious, hard working, friendly, many faceted person Mom was.

We went from there to New York to Daron's place, to help him put a new metal roof on his house. First, was the removal of his old roof. Daron and Frank worked on the roof. The men were able to get all the metal on, but not some of the flashing, ridge cap, and the like before we needed to head home.

The rest of Daron's family--wife Denise and sons Benjamin and Christopher and I picked up the paper, shingles, nails, and staples that missed the dumpster. We took a magnet all around the house several times to pick up nails, staples, and screws that were dropped. Denise made scads of food to keep the men fueled and happy. I helped some, but was pretty lazy and relaxed. We went shopping, baked cookies, and went to Chris's soccer game.

Back home meant back to work. Frank finished the great room floor in the kitchen, and went on to do the bathroom and the laundry room. I cleaned up the house and found bedding for brother Glenn and his friend Ron. They slept in the house on air mattresses to take a break from their trip to Columbus, OH, and back to eastern PA.

Frank set up our new wood stove and attached the chimney.

He put cove base in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. He checked the water lines to the kitchen and laundry. He again set up the laundry sink. He installed the dishwasher.

He brought the refrigerator, washer, and dryer down from John and Tonya's garage, and installed the refrigerator.

Speed bump #1: Our dryer is fitted with natural instead of bottled gas orifices. The Maytag people are supposed to come Friday to remedy that and install the dryer.

The company sent a man to measure our kitchen cabinets. He actually made an electronic template, so that our counters could be manufactured. He came a week later than originally scheduled.
Speed bump #2: Our counters will not be delivered until November 9!!!!! We had hoped to be in by the end of this month!

Meanwhile, I keep working away at the doors, trim, and frames for the bottom of the stairs, the laundry room, and our bedroom and closet. They are sanded, stained, resanded, and ready to apply the two coats of finish.

I have also planted some bushes and plants that have arrived for fall planting, but have many more holes to dig and fill before that task is complete.

Frank also installed the hood for the kitchen stove.

We are getting so close. Momentum has been good. Regretfully, the speed bumps are slowing us down! However, this is what we see almost every morning and evening when we look out our great room windows!

CHRISTMAS??!!!!

OCTOBER 4, 2010

Last Tuesday another truck came up our long lane and turned into our driveway. Over 20 boxes were unloaded into our great room. Frank was intensely animated. He had to open one of them right away. Then he made himself go back and finish his project--cutting frames and trim for our doors into the laundry room, our bedroom, the closet, and the door at the bottom of the stairs.

As soon as he could, he was back up opening boxes. Like Christmas! He could hardly wait, and didn't want to stop until all of them were open. Then he set the contents up like they would evemtually be. They were our kitchen cabinets, and they are beautiful. During the next two days, he installed them all . Here they are. What do you think?

I worked on sanding dry wall in the study. Next I started sanding frames, trim, and doors.

Frank picked up our flooring and started laying flooring in the great room.

This is how far he got by Monday when we had to leave.

Frank's mother passed away early Monday morning. We are now in the Lancaster area with family for several days.
